The Exeter Wastewater Treatment Facility, the first of its kind in the Seacoast, transforms the town’s sewage into a clean, nutrient depleted-disinfected outflow into the Squamscott River, the downstream Great Bay Estuary and ultimately Portsmouth Harbor. This facility and those of other municipalities within the watershed are playing a major role in reducing the pollution of our coastal waterways which are so important economically and recreationally. Senior Wastewater Operator, Derek Wyskiel, will show us the path that untreated water takes from the time it arrives, gets transformed, and is finally discharged into the Squamscott River. It is a fascinating journey involving “activated” sludge, nitrogen removal and finally UV disinfection before the water enters the river. You are guaranteed to leave the tour with an appreciation of how critically important facilities like this are to the health of our local waterways and the sophisticated technology that is required to handle such large volumes of sewage daily.
(For those interested, we will gather at a local eatery afterwards. When registering, please indicate in the comment section if you plan to attend the lunch.)
*Please note that the registration deadline for this event is September 9.
