In this enlightening and provocative presentation, Prof. Wheeler Ruml will reveal how artificial intelligence in one form, or another has been around since the ancient Greeks. However, today there are computational systems capable of mimicking complex aspects of human intelligence, including learning, reasoning, problem solving and decision-making. How does a robot decide what to do next? These are transformative, rapidly evolving and scary areas of development. Do you remember the HAL 9000 in 2001: A Space Odyssey? Come to Prof. Ruml’s program armed with questions and be prepared for a lively discussion. Because of limited parking, please carpool if possible. Indicate in the comment section if you plan to attend lunch afterwards at the Tideline Public House.
Dr. Wheeler Ruml is Professor of Computer Science at UNH where he has a long-standing program in artificial intelligence. He is interested in robotics, operations research, information visualization and cognitive science with the goal of understanding how to build autonomous systems. Prof. Ruml holds a Ph.D degree in Computer Science from Harvard.
