At the Seacoast Science Center, the backroom is where the real work happens. It’s the hub for life support systems, quarantine and holding, food prep, and all the behind-the-scenes care that keeps exhibits stable and animals healthy. While it’s out of public view, everything on exhibit depends on what happens in that space. You will see big pressurized sand filters just like the ones used on swimming pools, massive Bio-towers and fractionators (protein skimmers), and many many meters of pipes and plumbing running on the walls and even under the floor.
Our presenter is Sam Rutka, chief aquarist with over 15 years experience including at the NE Aquarium. He carries the huge responsibilities for animal welfare, operational reliability, and accurate scientific interpretation and contributes to educational programming as well.
NOTE:
At the Odiorne Park entrance gate, you will be directed to the back parking lot where there will be parking, including several handicapped spaces. You'll be met at that point to start your Backroom Tour appropriately at the back door.
